How To Install and Run ScummVM on the iPhone (or iPod Touch)

This. Is. Absolutely. Amazing.

One of the reasons why I love the iPhone is because of its gorgeous screen and touch interface. And here’s another reason why you should get an iPhone – ScummVM!

ScummVM allows you to play old-school LucasArts and Sierra adventures games, like Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Simon the Sorceror, etc. These are the games that I grew up with, and it’s fantastic seeing them in their full glory on the iPhone. Just check out this video of Day of the Tentacle running full-screen on the iPhone/iPod Touch:

Most games run perfectly! Special keys like the F1-F12 keys, ESC key and right-click are simulated, and you can follow this list here:

  • left click – Single tap
  • Right click – Hold one finger on screen where you want to click, single tap another
  • ESC – Hold one finger on screen, double tap another
  • F5 (menu) – Hold one finger on screen, swipe another down from top to bottom
  • F 0-9 keys – Press the keyboard button directly under the appropriate number
  • Pause – Keyboard spacebar
  • Toggle – Click+Drag mode    Hold one finger on screen, swipe another up from bottom to top. In this mode, a mouse click is sent immediately when you touch the screen, drags to wherever you slide your finger, and releases where you lift your finger. Useful for Monkey Island 3: The Curse of Monkey Island and Full Throttle.
  • Suspend – Press the button on the iPhone. This doesn’t quit your game and merely leaves your game running in the background so that you can make phone calls etc.
  • Quit- Press and hold the button for 5-6 seconds.

This has definitely brought tears to my eyes, and if you are looking to install ScummVM on your iPhone/iPod Touch, here are the instructions (from ScummVM Wiki)

  • Open on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.
  • Tap the "Sources" button in the bottom-right corner.
  • Tap the "Edit" button in the top-right corner.
  • Tap the "Add" button in the top-left corner.
  • Enter into the text area and tap "OK".
  • Installer will refresh your sources. It may close. If so, reopen it.
  • ScummVM is now available for install in the Games section.
