I was in New York City over Thanksgiving, just exploring the city and taking a much-enjoyed break. The city was amazing and so full of life. Everything was just bustling, and the city never seemed to sleep. The streets were filled with an fantastic cacophony of sounds, sights, and smells, which just hints at the range of diverse food that you can find within the city, with its incredibly diverse international population.
One of the things that caught my eye was the art of Ed Heck. It was wonderfully adorable, and so lighthearted and whimsical – as you can expect, it was very different from other art pieces you’d find, and I loved it. The vibrant colors and bold graphic lines that are his signature just seems to be from part of your imagination.
Ed Heck is a native New Yorker and his career is as paradoxical as the canvas landscapes he populates with monsters and misfits. After graduating from the School of the Visual Arts in New York, he went on to work as a scientific illustrator at the American Museum of Natural History. There among the bones and artifacts he created many of the graphics that would populate the fossil exhibits. His illustrations are often published in the prestigious magazine Scientific American. Other clients include the BBC and The Disney Company.
The other type of art that I found myself liking were photographs, and one photographer’s work caught my eye. He’s Ciaran Tully, and he takes very dramatic photographs, sometimes using special photographic techniques to create very expressive photographs. One piece that I particularly liked was this piece of the New York City skyline at night, that I found out from him was a composite of around 11 individual photographs.
