How To Quickly View Multiple Websites At Once in a Single Tab or Page

Ever had the need to check on multiple websites at once? Or the need to view several websites at a glance? Or to quickly check multiple websites to make sure nothing’s wrong?

Malware attacks and hacks are becoming more prevalent, and you might need to quickly just scan through the websites that you own to see if everything’s okay. Or if you are monitoring a site for a promotion or deal, then this lets you quickly check up on a site. If you run a business, this is a great way to quickly see what’s happening with your competitor’s websites as well, and if they’ve implemented any changes.

This single file was my solution to view multiple websites at once, and it allows me to tile as many websites as I want on a single page. I wasn’t happy with pure static thumbnail, rather preferring live versions of websites, so this is what the page does. Every “website image” that you see is actually a live website, zoomed out to a nice size that allows for multiple websites on the same page. I call it OneGlance.

It’s a single webpage coded in CSS and HTML, and does not require server-side scripting like Ruby, PHP, or ASP. It works with the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox, and I recommend that this file be run from your computer locally rather than your server.

Need to view more websites? The file contains 4 websites by default, but just duplicate the set of 4, and you’ll get 8 total. As simple as that!

Download the OneGlance zip here, and just extract it to anywhere on your computer and open the HTML file to use it.

How To Convert G2M3 Encoded WMV Video Files Into Standard WMV Video Files

The G2M3 codec is a codec that GoToMeeting uses. Not all computers, including Macs, can play videos encoded with the G2M3 codec. To convert videos encoded with the G2M3 codec into the normal WMV video codec so that any computer can play it, you need to download the Window Media Encoder and convert the video file.

Here are the steps:

  1. First, download and install Window Media Encoder
  2. Go to Start Menu > Programs > Windows Media > Windows Media Encoder
  3. Choose to “Convert a File”
  4. For the Source file, browse to the WMV video file that you want to convert
  5. Choose “File Download” and click on Next
  6. For Video, choose DVD quality (1Mbps VBR) and for Audio, choose CD quality (VBR), and click on Next
  7. Click on Next again, there will be no changes on this screen
  8. Uncheck “Begin converting when I click Finish”, and click Finish
  9. Click on Properties > Compression > Edit
  10. Select everything in the Bit Rates box and click Edit
  11. Check the box that says “Same as video input”
  12. Click Ok > Apply > Start Encoding

How To Clean A Squeaky Laptop or Computer Keyboard

I have a Logitech keyboard that was acting up on me and squeaking when I type on it. It got so bad that I couldn’t take it anymore and went to find a way. Turns out that there’s a pretty cheap way to fix squeaky keyboards.

The solution? Silicone spray (Get it from Amazon). Silicone spray is pretty fantastic and is super slippery and non-reactive. So besides your keyboard, it can lubricate almost anything. It works especially well on porous items, such as plastic, but is also a good lubricant on hinges, locks, and so on.

I knew which keys were giving me the problems, so I used an old badge to pry them out, sprayed some silicone spray, and put the keys back. After which, everything was all good again!

How To Split Firefox into Different Windows/Tabs And See Everything At Once

If you work with many websites, or want to keep track of many different websites, and would like to do that simultaneously, then the default Firefox probably wouldn’t cut it for you. Safari has live bookmarks that may do what you want, but in my personal opinion, these following Firefox add-ons do a much better job.

Firefox Splitter (Formerly Split Browser)

Firefox Splitter is an add-on that allows you to browse with multiple tabs open at once in front of you (instead of having just one tab open in the foreground). This would be really useful to watch a video while web browsing, or allowing you to monitor your stock portfolio, or the latest news while you surf the net in another tab.

Showcase allows you to manage your current Firefox tabs and windows by showing them as thumbnails in a single window, tab or in a sidebar.

Speed Dial

Made by the same people that gave you Showcase, µWorks. Speed Dial gives you the ability to have a home page or tab where you can put your favorite sites, and show a (live) screenshot of every website.

How To Use Spaces Effectively With Multiple Monitors On The Mac

Many people swear by Spaces, a feature on the Mac that allows you to have multiple desktops, and have applications “assigned” to each desktop. I think it’s a fantastic idea too, but using it together with multiple monitors just creates a bad experience.

The current problem with it now, in my opinion, is that Spaces takes all your monitors as one desktop. So if you switch from Space 1 to Space 2, all your monitor switch together. That makes using your spaces much harder to use. Ideally, each monitor should be able to have their own independent space, so that you can have better control of what goes where.

Until Apple incorporates this functionality, I won’t be using Spaces to its full potential. As such, I’ve resorted to using Spaces in a pretty “dumbed” down way while my Mac is plugged to my external LCD. Instead of a fancy 4×4 or 3×2 matrix or something, I only have 2 Spaces created. The first space is my “working” area where everything opens in by default, and my second space is my “all others” area, where I can throw things that I need open, but don’t have to refer to as much. These can be things like my FTP windows, my Mail window, my Adium, my Tweet Deck etc. Everything else has to be in the first space because I find that I work between them all the time (e.g. moving files, copying text, referring to documents, and so on).
